Julia Heywood

Author/Writer/Poet

Welcome to my little corner of the internet. Stories live here. Some funny, some, deep, all a bit unexpected. I'm sure you'll find exactly what you didn't know you were looking for...

About MeI’m a daydreamer turned storyteller.Born in Yorkshire, I’ve never really settled in one place, whether that’s due to wanderlust, itchy feet, or a deep-rooted resistance to staying put, I’m not sure. But each new postcode has brought its own magic, and along the way, I’ve collected stories, characters, and a deep curiosity about how people tick.

How I Started WritingMy writing journey began when a sudden illness brought everything to a halt. One minute I was full steam ahead, the next I could barely move. It was a shock, but it also became an invitation to pause and write. Writing became my outlet, my therapy. When I couldn’t move, my imagination ran marathons.

The Way My Brain Works (It’s Very Colourful)Here’s something a bit quirky - I experience synesthesia, which means my brain connects things in colourful ways. Every word, name, number, thought, and feeling has its own unique hue. It’s like my inner world is constantly colour-coded, sometimes chaotic, always vivid. This magical miswiring spills into my stories, giving them extra texture and depth.

What I WriteMy stories are playful, thoughtful, and just a little bit philosophical. I love sneaking big ideas into small moments, whether it’s a snail learning to slow down, a dolphin dazzled by a mermaid, or a thought-provoking memoir that feels like Bridget Jones accidentally wandered into an ashram.I believe stories can be both light-hearted and profound. Preferably at the same time.

Where Inspiration StrikesInspiration usually visits me in the bath or in my dreams, but never both at once (Not a good idea to fall asleep in the bath!). I write with humour, heart, and a touch of mischief, because that’s just how my brain works.

My Wish for YouWhether you’re five or ninety-five, I hope my books leave you smiling, thinking, and maybe seeing the world in a slightly more magical way.
